Charles Mann, author of the award-winning book 1491, explores the nature of the New World of North and South America in the period before Columbus' arrival. The talk will address both the nature of the regional landscape and the endemic human societies that helped to shape it. Sponsored by Biology, Environmental Studies, Anthropology, History, and the Lecture Committee.
5:30 p.m., WCMA Rotunda.
By the time Rebecca Salazar '89 first heard the late Mercedes Sosa interpreting Violeta Parra's Gracias a la vida, she had heard the song sung many times by others. It was immediately apparent to her that Sosa, known throughout Latin America as "the voice of the silent majority," owned the song. Rebecca returns to Williams with guitarist Barry Kornhauser and our own Freddie Bryant as part of the Latina/o Heritage Month celebration. Reception begins at 4:30; concert at 5:30 p.m. Sponsored by Vista, Alumni Relations, WCMA and the Multicultural Center.
