American Studies
See America and the world through an interdisciplinary lens
The American Studies Program at Williams is one of the oldest in the country—yet our curriculum reflects the exciting and important changes unfolding in this wildly interdisciplinary field. We ask complex and critical questions about aspects of American life that are both newly emerging and that have deep roots in enslavement, dispossession, empire and more. Shifting away from the American exceptionalism of the field’s origins, the program today offers a critical interrogation of the United States, both within and beyond the geopolitical boundaries of the nation.
Specialized Learning
As an American Studies major, you’ll focus your electives in one of four areas—Arts in Context, Comparative Studies in Race, Ethnicity and Diaspora, Critical and Cultural Theory, or Space and Place—with opportunities for cross-disciplinary study.
