Each January, the Office of Student Accounts prepares Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement for Williams students. The original forms for the 2020 tax year will be mailed by January 31, 2021 to the permanent address on file for each student. A request for an additional copy of Form 1098-T must be made by the student (not the parent/guardian) since the form is issued in the student’s name.
Since the IRS does not require that Form 1098-T be issued for nonresident alien students, students with that status who wish to receive this form must submit a request to our office in writing via an e-mail to [email protected] before January 15, 2021.
Please note that the 1098-T provides information on the qualified tuition & fees paid and the scholarship & grant amounts that have been applied to your student account. This information can be used to determine eligibility for certain educational tax credits (American Opportunity and Lifetime Learning tax credits) and is NOT to be used to calculate the amount of your scholarship & grant aid that is taxable. You may visit the IRS website for additional information on Form 1098-T.
Williams uses the “paid tuition & fees” method of reporting, not the “billed tuition & fees” method.
Please contact the Office of Student Accounts at [email protected] or 413-597-4396 if you have any questions. While we can address questions regarding the preparation of this form, we are unable to provide you with tax advice. If you have tax filing or planning questions, please seek the counsel of an informed tax preparer or advisor.
