Sophomore Chiara Del Piccolo bested 276 competitors to win the Division III NCAA Cross Country Championship title Nov. 19. Her six-kilometer time of 20:52:08 was a full five seconds ahead of second-place finisher Christy Cazzola of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Del Piccolo’s finish capped off a season of growth that began with a ninth-place finish in the Purple Valley Classic in September. A win in the Little Three Championship started her on a winning streak that ended at the national championships at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winnecone, WI.
“The key for Chiara is her amazing work ethic,” says cross country head coach Pete Farwell. “She really attacks all of her workouts. She worked very hard over the summer, and throughout the season has been working on her fitness and strength.”
Del Piccolo’s win helped the Ephs earn an NCAA third-place team finish, behind 2010 champion Middlebury and this year’s champion, Washington University in St. Louis.
A year ago Del Piccolo clocked in at 22:02.80 in the six-kilometer race, finishing the season at 55th in the nation. Read more about Del Piccolo’s road to success here.
