Darren Hartwell ’13 grew up in North Reading, Mass., just a few miles from Fenway Park and the Boston Red Sox he idolized. It was in college at Williams, 140 miles away, that he landed his dream summer job, covering the Red Sox for ESPNBoston.com.
A job covering men’s ice hockey for Williams’ Sports Information office opened the door to the summer gig at Fenway, and Hartwell jumped at the chance to cover his beloved Sox. The history major and two-sport varsity athlete worked long hours and wrote two dozen stories for the website from June through August, covering the Sox-Yankee series, a 14-inning game against the Kansas City Royals, and a wild contest against the Baltimore Orioles that included a bench-clearing brawl.
Hartwell relished the chance to interview David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, and others, and to share a press box with legendary sportswriters such as Mike Lupica and Dan Shaughnessy.
“My internship with ESPNBoston this summer gave me an unprecedented look into the world of sports journalism and was an experience I will never forget,” he says.
