The Environmental Studies major is a ten-course major. All majors are required to take:
- ENVI 101 – Nature and Society: An Introduction to Environmental Studies
- ENVI 102 – Introduction to Environmental Science (Students with a score of 5 on the AP Environmental Science exam may take a 200-level environmental science lab course, cross-listed with Environmental Studies, in lieu of ENVI 102)
- One foundational Culture/Humanities course
- One foundational Social Science/Policy course
- One foundational Environmental Science course
- Three electives from one of the curricular branches (Culture/Humanities; Social Science/Policy; and Environmental Science)
- One elective from a second curricular branch to provide cross-disciplinary breadth
- One senior seminar
The elective categories listed above apply to students in the Class of 2028 and later. Students graduating with the Environmental Studies major in the Class of 2027 and earlier are required to distribute their electives across a slightly differently-defined set of categories (indicated in the catalog as “old requirements”): Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences; Policy; and Natural World (which is the same as the new Environmental Science category). Any questions about how electives are categorized for your major can be directed to the Chair.
Electives should be chosen in close consultation with a faculty adviser to ensure intellectual coherence and academic rigor.
Students interested in the Environmental Studies major or concentration are encouraged to consult with members of the Environmental Studies Program, including the Chair of Environmental Studies, regularly as they plan their course of study. All incoming majors will be assigned a faculty advisor in the spring of their sophomore year.
