FAQ

  • Williams is undertaking a comprehensive study of spaces for athletics, recreation, physical education, and wellbeing activities with our consulting partner, Perkins & Will. Informed by broad and collaborative community engagement, the programming study will suggest potential new facilities and renewal of existing ones and include both formal and informal spaces.

This project is a strategic and intentional step toward developing and implementing a comprehensive approach to athletics and wellbeing that extends across the campus.

  • The team is evaluating spaces that offer opportunities for athletic practice and competition, recreation and connection, both indoors and out, and the linkages that bring together these venues throughout the entire campus.

  • The unexpected closure of Towne Field House in March 2023, along with alumni gifts in support of the college's strategic initiatives, have accelerated some of this work, notably the construction of a new Multipurpose Recreation Center (MRC) to temporarily house what was in Towne and the programming study itself. It is important to note that both the study, due to be completed in April 2025, and construction of the MRC, due to be completed in late 2025, are early strategic steps toward developing and implementing a far-reaching vision for athletics and wellbeing that extends across the campus.

  • To date, the team has toured the athletics facilities and well being spaces as well as areas for outdoor recreation, relaxation and gathering. Faculty and staff in these departments have been interviewed and student engagement is underway. Check out the project timeline here.

  • Since March, we've been engaging with people all over campus through space tours, online interviews and pop up stops. And we want you to help, too!

    • Students: 7 open houses, 4 workshops
