Revell Carr Student Research Internship in Maritime Studies

The Revell Carr Student Research Internship in Maritime Studies is designed to support independent research during the summer at Mystic Seaport in maritime studies, including but not limited to maritime history (including the role of minorities in American maritime history), maritime art, marine policy and coastal zone management, marine science and literature of the sea.

Eligibility: The Carr Internship is open to currently enrolled full-time undergraduates at accredited colleges and universities or to students for whom it is their first summer after graduation. The internship is competitive.

Living Arrangements and Stipend: Carr Interns live at Mystic Seaport full-time during their three-month (June, July and August) summer research program. A stipend of $3200 is provided; room and board are not included (Housing fees are approximately $100/week). Interns live in coed cooperative housing.

Applications: Applications should include a cover sheet with your name, college, permanent and college contact information and the title of your proposed project; a description (maximum three double spaced pages) of your proposed independent research project, including a brief preliminary bibliography; and your resume (maximum three double spaced pages).

Deadline: Completed applications are due in the spring by March 1. Announcement of intern appointments will be made by April 1.

The Crowley Maritime Corporation Summer Internship

In a generous partnership with Mystic Seaport, Crowley Maritime Corporation (a worldwide marine transportation and logistics corporation) is offering a paid summer internship at their Jacksonville, FL headquarters for one Williams-Mystic alumnus.  This internship is a unique opportunity available only to Williams-Mystic undergraduate alumni and current students of Williams-Mystic to work at a high level in a major maritime corporation.

This year, the internship is being offered in the Corporate Public Relations Department at Crowley. The Corporate Public Relations department is responsible for public relations, advertising and marketing communications for the corporation, its subsidiaries and business units operating around the world. The specific  projects are being determined, but will involve some research and much writing. For example, last year's project was copy-writing for the employee newsletter, including interviewing, writing articles, editing, fact-checking, and helping to design new advertising schemes. The position will report to the Senior Specialist, Corporate Communications.

The internship is designed to provide intern with significant exposure to Crowley and the marine industry. For more information on Crowley Maritime Corporation, please go to www.crowley.com <http://www.crowley.com> .

 Responsibilities include:
*A brief rotational program to meet with upper management, and to familiarize the intern with Crowley corporate structure and operations
*Project assignments, of both a strategic and/or tactical nature, with an end product as defined by the sponsoring business unit/department
*Complete some general administrative duties for the department when necessary
*An evaluation process to measure the success of the internship from both Crowley and the intern's perspective

Eligibility:
*Completion of the Williams-Mystic program, and currently a college Sophomore, Junior, or Senior (or be in the summer directly after graduation)
*Strong background in writing or journalism
*Self-motivated with good analytical and communications skills. Must possess a strong knowledge of computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook, and preferably exposure to Adobe graphics programs and Quark Express
* minimum 3.0 GPA
* must meet all basic employment criteria for Crowley

Living Arrangements and Compensation:
* 6- 8 weeks during the summer (Details of starting and ending date will be worked out by the intern with Crowley.)
* full-time 40 hours per week, paid hourly
* Crowley will provide housing in an apartment or residence hotel during the internship if intern is not a Jacksonville-area resident and a rental car; also may arrange transportation to and from Jacksonville for the internship.

Marine Geology & Geophysics Internship

The Research Internship in Marine Geology & Geophysics is designed to support independent research during the summer at Mystic Seaport. One or two students will be selected each summer to assist Professor Lisa Gilbert with on-going studies of mid-ocean ridge and seamount processes. Laboratory, field, and computer modeling studies are all possible projects.

Eligibility: The Internship is open to currently enrolled full-time undergraduates at accredited colleges and universities or to students. Geology or similar majors preferred, but all majors considered.

Logistics: A stipend of $350/week is provided for up to 10 weeks. Scheduling is somewhat flexible to accommodate for academic calendars from different colleges, generally internships are during the months of June, July, and early August. Students may arrange for an internship of 6 to 10 weeks, mutually agreed upon before employment begins. Internship will sometimes include field research or research cruise participation, again, depending on interest and scheduling. Coed cooperative housing is available at a reasonable rate in Williams-Mystic's historic homes.

Alumni Research Fellowship

Since 1997, Williams-Mystic has offered its alumni the opportunity for further research in the field of maritime studies under the Alumni Research Fellowship program. Up to $1,000 per project is made available each year for research opportunities in any maritime studies discipline.

Williams-Mystic Fellows may do their research in Mystic, or in locations around the world, as is relevant to their topic. Applications are anticipated from all fields, from researching Nantucket's literary past, determining solutions to marine policy issues on New Zealand's coast, to details of Mystic Seaport's involvement with the Amistad Project or working on an introduced species research grant. Advisors should be drawn from the Williams-Mystic faculty and contacted prior to your proposal.

Fellowships are awarded to Williams-Mystic alumni to support travel, research and/or writing; fellows are requested to write a short report on their research within six months of research completion. Summer housing may be available for up to eight weeks in Mystic.

Applications: Applications should include a cover sheet with your name, college, permanent and college contact information and the title of your proposed project; a description (maximum three single-spaced pages) of your proposed project, including a brief preliminary bibliography; a complete resume (does not need to be restricted to one page) with names, addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses of three references; and a budget describing how you would allocate the funds (e.g. travel expenses, supplies, living expenses, lodging, photocopy costs, etc.).

Deadline: Completed applications are due in the spring by April 15. Announcement of intern appointments will be made by May 1.
