During the summer, the Frank C. Munson Institute at Mystic Seaport offers America's oldest and most respected graduate level courses in Maritime Studies. Educating over six hundred students during the last fifty years, the Munson Institute is open to anyone interested in studying the sea, including teachers, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and auditors. Mystic Seaport provides the backdrop for the Munson Institute courses in American History accredited through the University of Connecticut, Wesleyan University, and Trinity College.

Each year, Mystic Seaport invites applications for the annual competition for the Paul Cuffe Memorial Fellowship which provides funds for researchers interested in Native and African Americans in the maritime activities of New England. These fellowships support research and writing, a portion of which should normally be carried out in the Mystic area.
