About the Center

History

The Faculty Center for Media Technologies (originally called Center for Technology in the Arts and Humanities, "CTAH") was established at Williams in 1997. The project arose primarily in response to the strong advocacy of Professor Mark Taylor, the Center's first director, for recognizing the increased importance of technology in the liberal arts environment.

Fellows have shot and edited video documentaries on Afghanistan, the Biosphere, and the 2004 Estonian Song Festival; have experimented with virtual reality technologies to document important works of architecture; have supported museum installations; have conducted experiments in Botany and Environmental Studies; and have designed course aids in subjects ranging from Japanese to jazz.

In addition to its primary mission of providing financial and technological support for faculty projects, the Center has sponsored public seminars and panel discussions, short residencies by artists and scientists, and workshops in subjects ranging from interactive fiction to digital imaging and robotics. As the need for encouraging new activities and projects arises, please contact the director, who will attempt to find the means for providing some coordination and support.

Location and Equipment

The Center has a laboratory for the use of Fellows on the second floor of the Spencer Art Building (Room 216). Spencer is on the east side of the Williams College campus behind the Williamstown Savings Bank on Main Street. The Center has a number of stations equipped with the latest PC and MAC computers, audio and video digital editing facilities, scanners, printers, and a Panasonic AG-DVX100 video camera with associated equipment. Fellows are also invited to use the well-equipped facilities (including equipment on loan) of the Office of Instructional Technology in Jesup Hall.
