This collection is
concerned with David Dudley Field (1781-1867), clergyman and historian,
and his four sons: David Dudley Field (1805-1894), lawyer, law
reformer, and politician; Cyrus West Field (1819-1892), merchant
and promoter of railroads and the first Atlantic telegraph cable; Stephen
Johnson Field (1816-1899), lawyer, jurist, and U.S. Supreme Court
Justice; and Henry Martyn Field (1822-1907), clergyman and author
of popular travel books and biographies; as well as other members of the
Field Family. Several family members graduated from Williams College or
were given honorary degrees by Williams.
