Social Services and Nonprofits

Do you have an urge to do good, to give back, to lift up, to change things for the better? Have you always been involved in some public or community service effort throughout your life? Do you get your energy from doing this kind of work?

Perhaps you’re hoping to continue these good works once you graduate. I’m Ron Gallagher, the career counselor at the OCC who specializes in the social service and nonprofit career fields, and I’d love to talk with you about how to start a career of service to others.

Some students worry that they can not pursue this career field because of their financial obligations – to pay back college loans, help their families with assistance, pay the high cost of living in many major cities. It is hardly ever the case that work in the not-for-profit field means that you can not make a living and live a comfortable life, raise a family, and send your kids to college. It is worth spending the time to find out more about careers in the nonprofit, social service fields because you might just find a career that is deeply rewarding and fulfilling.

I have spent much of my life working for the public good and would like to talk with you about how you can explore this field, too. There are many good resources for you to explore in addition, that are linked to this website. Please take a look and see how to do good and do well at the same time.
