At the risk of being too un-philosophical, I'll simply tell about what I've been doing since graduation, and perhaps others will be able to figure out exactly how a major in philosophy has contributed. (I say this not to irk anyone, but because I think philosophy adds to my everyday life, both in and out of work, in a variety of different ways. Knowing how to think critically, defend your arguments orally, and write concisely are the three most important life skills to have. And philosophy develops all of them.)
Anyway, as far as what I've been up to: For the past two years I've been teaching seventh grade English at a school in Boston that is funded and run by Outward Bound. In the process, I've become an Outward Bound Instructor, and led backpacking, sailing, and canoeing expeditions this past summer.
Now I'm working at an after-school enrichment program called Citizen Schools. I work with sixth, seventh, and eighth graders three days out of the week. The rest of the time I am developing a technology program called Tech@Home which trains low-income families on computers, and at the end of the training they take the computers home, free of charge. The philosophy behind the technology program, obviously, is trying to get computers into low-income houses.
All in all, life's great. I love Boston, I love my job, and working with kids is a fabulous thing.
LONG LIVE PHILOSOPHY MAJORS!!!
I'll be in touch soon,
Brett
