After graduating from Williams I spent two years working in Cologne, Germany.
In addition to teaching English, I also took some philosophy classes at the
University and became
politically active in refugee assistance. I realized that I wanted to teach
but not at the high school level.
The solution...grad school. I applied in both philosophy and political theory.
I decided to do my PhD in a political science department because it seemed to
present more
opportunities to study continental thought. Also, my research in political philosophy
made it possible to
explore the connections between theory and practice.
Getting a PHD and spending your entire 20's in school is not for everyone,
but
on good days it felt like getting paid to read books. One month into my tenure
track job at the University of Florida (Gainesville), I love it!
