References to Nietzsche's Works

I have relied primarily on Sdmtliche Werke. Kritische Studienausgabe in 15 Bdnden (KSA), ed. Giorgio Colli and Mazzino Montinari, 15 vols. (Berlin: de Gruyter, 1980). I have consulted, and often followed, the translations listed below. This list should clarify parenthetical references to Nietzsche's works. In all such references, the numbers refer to sections, not to pages; "P" designates the Preface or Prologue to a work.

A: The Antichristian. Translated by Walter Kaufmann as The Antichrist. In PN (see below).

BT: The Birth o f Tragedy. SC designates the "Attempt at a Self-Criticism" added by Nietzsche to the second edition of BT. Translated by Walter Kaufmann. In BW (see below).

BW: Basic Writings o f Nietzsche. Edited by Walter Kaufmann. New York: The Modern Library, 1968.

D: Dawn. Translated by R. J. Hollingdale as Daybreak. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1982.

EH: Ecce Homo. Translated by Walter Kaufmann. In BW.

GM: The Genealogy of Morals. Translated by Walter Kaufmann. In BW.

HH: Human, All Too Human. Translated by R. J. Hollingdale. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1986.

JS: The Joyful Science. Translated by Walter Kaufmann as The Gay Science. New York: Vintage Books, 1974.

N: Nachlass. References are keyed to the Kritische Gesamtausgabe (KGA), on which KSA is based. Most of the passages I refer to are from division VIII of the KGA, contained in volumes 12 and 13 of the KSA; when I cite from KGA division VII (KSA 10-11), I add the roman numeral. My references, in the form x[y] (or VII:x[y]), should allow the passages to be found easily in either KGA or KSA. In relating KSA-KGA passages to WP (see below), I have relied on the various concordances contained in KGA.

PN: The Portable Nietzsche. Edited by Walter Kaufmann. New York: Viking Press, 1954.

SE: Schopenhauer as Educator. Translated by R. J. Hollingdale. In U.11 (see below).

TI: Twilight of the Idols. Translated by Walter Kaufmann. In PN.

UM: Untimely Meditations. Translated by R. J. Hollingdale. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1983.

WB: Richard Wagner in Bayreuth. Translated by R. J. Hollingdale. In UM.

WP: The Will to Power. Translated by Walter Kaufmann and R. J. Hollingdale. New York: Vintage Books, 1968.

Z: Thus Spoke Zarathustra. I provide part and section numbers, and then page and line numbers from volume 4 of the KSA. Translated by R. J. Hollingdale. Middlesex: Penguin Books, 1961. Also translated by Walter Kaufmann, in PN.
