Morality as defense against goodness.  In The Genealogy of Morals, Nietzsche develops this suggestion in detail, arguing that the "slave rebellion in morality" is led by those who are unable to attain goodness qua excellence or nobility, and who therefore redefine goodness as meekness or humility.
