The Jazz Ensemble consists of some 20 student musicians performing
a variety of music ranging from traditional Big Band styles
to avant garde works. Emphasis is also placed on development
of improvisational skills in small ensembles. Three or four
formal concerts are offered each year, often featuring a guest
soloist. Most concert feature student soloists, compositions
and/or arrangements, frequently an off-shoot of classwork
done with director and Clay Artist-in-Residence in Jazz
Andy Jaffe.
The group also plays for occasional student dances, Family
Weekend activities and other functions. The group was named
co-winner in the Boston University Collegiate Jazz Festival
in 1991, and now sponsors its own annual
spring intercollegiate jazz festival, featuring 6-8 regional ensembles and two well-known
professional musicians as adjudicators.
