Applied Linear Algebra, by B. Noble and J. Daniel, Third Edition, 1988.
Course Description
In this course we will be an introduction to the basic theory and applications of Linear Algebra. The topics to be covered include matrices, linear systems, vector spaces and linear transformations.
Exams
Two take home exams and a final.
First exam on October 6 or 7.
Second exam on November 10 or 11.
Final scheduled by the Registrar.
Grading
Homework 15 % (Two homework sets are dropped; NO LATE homework.
Quizzes 10%(One quiz grade is dropped; NO LATE quizzes.
First exam 25%, second exam 25%
Final exam 25%.
In all cases the judgment of the instructor is what determines the final grade.
Homework
Homework will be collected each week at the beginning of class, mostly on Fridays. Late homework will not be accepted. If for any reason you cannot make it to class, plan ahead so that a friend can turn in the homework for you.
Each week I will assign about 15-20 problems, with 4-7 problems from each of the 3 lectures. Of the assigned problems, 5 will be randomly selected for grading; each will be worth 5 points. For a given day, turn in the problems assigned on the syllabus that appear in bold face. The problems that are not in bold face are for you to practice.
T.A.
The T.A. is Tegan Cheslack-Postava. She will conduct help sessions at times to be determined.
Resource Center
The resource center will also be available to you with 105 tutors on Sunday through Thursday, 8 till midnight in Room 106, Physics.
Honor Code
All work done on the quizzes, the exams and the final is expected to be solely the work of each individual. All quizzes, and the first exam are are closed book, the second exam and the final are open book; notes are not allowed. However, calculators will be permitted. On the homework sets you may consult with any other student who is taking this course or with the T.A. However, the write up must be done individually and each person who has been consulted must be acknowledged.
