George Pratt Schultz, Doctor of Laws

George ShultzImpressive even for a Renaissance man, you have served as a Marine, teacher, scholar, author, lecturer, businessman, Director of the federal Office of Management and Budget, Chairman of the President’s Economic Policy Advisory Board, and, oh yeah, Secretary of Labor, Secretary of the Treasury, and Secretary of State. The only challenge left for you may be Dancing with the Stars. All this you have done with great intelligence and without ideology. As the last Cold War Secretary of State, you were known for your statesmanlike ability to address in any negotiation the best interest of the other side — a skill that advanced your subsequent efforts to slow nuclear proliferation and your current work in combating global climate change. Your State Department memoir, Turmoil and Triumph, has been called “the most informative source available for the diplomacy that marked the last years of the Cold War.” The State Department even named after you its National Foreign Service Training Center. Still active on the domestic and international scene long after your contemporaries headed to the golf course, you continue to work toward the world’s economic and political advancement with uncommon wisdom and grace.

I hereby declare you recipient of the honorary degree Doctor of Laws, entitled to all the rights, honors, and privileges appertaining thereto.
