Gordon C. Winston, Orrin Sage Professor of Political Economy, Emeritus

Gordon Winston For forty-one years you have helped introduce students to the most glorious of the social sciences ... economics. And you have served over that time in wide-ranging roles in faculty governance and in administration, including as Provost of the College. All of this teaching and service has been informed by an extraordinary program of research — first into development economics and economic theory and more recently into the economics of higher education. Your clarity of analysis has brought much needed insight into the mysteries of college costs, prices, access, and effects. You have opened new areas of research for others to follow. You have devised a new, clearer way for colleges to report their finances, which is slowly but inevitably gaining use. It’s no wonder that you've been invited to testify before Congress and that your phone number is on every higher education reporter’s speed dial. You sail off into retirement with the gratitude not only of all us at Williams but of all policy makers — on campuses, at foundations, and in government — charged with deciding the best and most just uses of higher education resources.

I hereby declare you Orrin Sage Professor of Political Economy, Emeritus, entitled to all the rights, honors, and privileges appertaining thereto.
