The Winter Study Period trip to Europe, required of all first-year students in the Program, is unique among graduate art history programs in North America.
In
recent years the itinerary has included Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands,
Turkey, the Czech Republic, France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
Students have visited Berlin, Dresden, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Florence, Rome,
Venice, Istanbul, London, Paris, Prague, Vienna, Munich, Colmar, Strasbourg,
Frankfurt, Cologne, and Düsseldorf. Many of these towns and cities offer a
remarkable number of distinguished collections or monuments of the art of
most periods and cultures.
Students are required to make oral presentations on specific objects, and the choices consistently cover a diverse array of works. Costs for transatlantic and intercity transportation and for hotel accommodations (including buffet breakfast) are included in tuition.
In 2004 students traveled
to Venice, Vicenza, Mantova, Vienna, Munich, Nürnberg, Dresden, Berlin,
and Potsdam. The January 2005 trip included Madrid, Paris, Strasbourg,
Colmar, Neuß (Germany), Baden-Baden, Basel, Schaffhausen, Winterthur,
and Munich. Click here
