IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES
DURING SPRING BREAK 2008

SUMMARY

Stetson/Sawyer Site Work to Disrupt Area North of Hopkins Hall

With Spring Break rapidly approaching, the project will be entering a new phase as the intensity of site work outside the new buildings increases. The most disruptive part of this work will occur immediately north and west of Hopkins Hall. The area where the wooden benches are located near the lowest entrance on the north side will be reconfigured. A curb cut will be established on the northwest side of Hopkins Hall Drive and the sidewalks to the west of Hopkins will be moved. Sidewalks on either the east or west side of Hopkins Hall will always be available for use.

DETAILED INFORMATION

With Spring Break rapidly approaching I would like to provide everyone a sense of what to expect during that period and also what is going to be happening from then on until the North and South Buildings are completed in July.

The exterior brick veneer on the North Building is complete and the staging and protective tarps are currently being removed. The South Building trails the North by about three weeks, and the staging will not start coming down there until late March or early April.

Meanwhile crews are working fast and furiously on the interiors of both buildings. All partitions are framed, electrical and mechanical rough-in is 80% complete, the North Building has about 75% of the drywall installed and about 50% of that already taped and ready to be painted.

Starting on March 15th (the first Saturday of Spring Break) we will begin remobilizing the site crews to tackle the crucial work of installing all the roadways, sidewalks and landscaping that needs to be completed before the Department of Inspection Services will allow us to occupy these buildings.

At the South Building site:
The most disruptive part of this work is located immediately north and west of Hopkins Hall.
• To facilitate the installation of a fire truck access lane to the South Building the existing terraced garden area (where the wooden benches are located near the lowest entrance on the north side) will be reconfigured with a small retaining wall constructed.
• To access this fire lane a new curb cut will be established on the northwest side of Hopkins Hall Drive. This curb cut will be located at the existing intersecting point where the sidewalks from Hopkins, Stetson and the Chapel Lot now meet.
• Sidewalks on the west side of Hopkins Hall from Route 2 North will also be reconfigured.
• The establishment of lawns and plantings will immediately follow these “hardscape” activities.

We will concentrate our efforts on the areas closest to Hopkins Hall during the break period and phase the remaining work to be the least disruptive to pedestrian traffic as possible.

At the North Building Site:
• The first activity will be an electrical shutdown on Saturday March 15th which will disrupt power to Sawyer, Stetson and the two construction sites from 7:00am to approximately 7:00pm that day.
• Crews will also start to dismantle the former Sawyer Library Drive (current construction road) and transform it into a pedestrian way that will also serve as the fire truck access to the North Building and the future new Sawyer Library.
• Sidewalks will also be installed within the courtyard that was created between Bernhard, Lehman and the new North Building.
• The establishment of lawns and plantings will immediately follow the “hardscape” activities at this site as well.

To make a long story short the exterior work activity at both the North and South Building sites is going to significantly increase as weather permits and these activities will continue right through until the buildings are completed in July and occupied in August.

As always, if you have any further questions or concerns please contact me at x3225.

Thanks,
Bruce Decoteau, Facilities
