Andrew Lazarow, a contract major in Performance Studies, is a young director, designer, and actor. On campus he has directed with Cap and Bells and acted in a number of plays with the theatre department. He is a company member of Cincinnati’s New Stage Collective, where he has worked as a director, actor, and projection designer.
Andrew’s fieldwork was with Dodger Theatricals, a Broadway production Office. He worked with them while the opened the new Broadway musical Jersey Boys: The story of Franki Valli and The Four Seasons. Andrew spent much of his time working with the marketing department at Dodgers, but also worked with the various stage unions.
"It was truly a wonderful experience. It was fascinating to see how a Broadway Musical is actually produced. I learned a lot about how the industry works, and how decisions are made. It also allowed me to look at theatre from an entirely different perspective: from the production side of the art form.
"The office was also incredibly kind to me. They offered free tickets to their Off-Broadway show Drumstruck. They let me bring everyone in the program to Jersey Boys’s first preview performance. Also, they gave me two front row seats to opening night. I went with Krista, and there we were, in black tie, with Robert Deniro and Joe Pesci sitting five rows behind us. It was a surreal experience.
"Professor Jackal is an extremely kind, giving, articulate, and knowledgeable man—everything a student could as for in a teacher. If I expressed an interest in something, he would go out of his way to introduce me to men and women in that particular field. And that kindness has continued even though I am back on campus. Just the other day I emailed him a question. Professor Jackall responded with an email that was several pages long, and he cited books that might provide even more help.
"I would really recommend this program for anyone, regardless of where they are from. I saw a show almost every week, (beyond what we saw in class), for less that $20 dollars a ticket. We went out to clubs, the New York Film Festival, museums, amazing restaurants . . .. We spent an entire Sunday in Harlem, and also spent time in Tribecca and SoHo. One night Brandon, Walden, and I even saw Ben Folds sitting in the subway with us. The friends I made, the places and things I saw . . . it was a once in a lifetime experience. We were living in New York City, and Williams took care of everything that New Yorkers have to worry about, (food, rent, transportation, etc.)”
