The Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Community & Preventive Medicine is one of the leading medical centers focused on environmental health issues in the United States. The department’s many research projects include: a blueprint for controlling lead and silica hazards in construction work sites; the identification of disease-causing hazards in New York City with a special focus on dangers to children; the identification and prevention of neurological and behavioral impairments in children resulting from exposure to pesticides, PCBs, lead, and other developmental toxins; and the prevention of childhood asthma in East Harlem.

Students placed in the Department of Community & Preventive Medicine work with top epidemiologists and physicians on their research projects, which include extensive fieldwork to assess and monitor environmental health threats.
