International Rescue Committee
For 75 years, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has aided men, women, and children fleeing from political oppression, war, and religious, ethnic, and racial violence. Through its Emergency Response Unit, IRC has responded to scores of humanitarian crises in 35 countries over the years, including Afghanistan, Albania, Burundi, Chechnya, East Timor, Ethiopia, and Uganda, among others. In the United States, IRC operates 16 regional resettlement offices that aid refugees in starting over, gaining employment, and learning English. And IRC advocates for refugees in both national and international forums on a host of issues, including: human trafficking, gender-based violence, and war-affected children and youth.
Students placed at the International Rescue Committee have the chance to meet refugees from all over the world at IRC’s New York City office, to see how dedicated administrators work to relocate them successfully, and to observe top advocates’ attempts to shape public policies affecting people in trouble.
