John, as director of the OCC since August of 2005, comes to Williams with 25 years of experience in career services, 16 years as a director, at Harvard College, Duke University, and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He has also worked as a television production assistant, elementary school teacher, and as an editor in the publishing industry. He is the author of several books and articles on job hunting and career planning. His specialty at Williams is working with those students who have yet to decide on what career field to pursue. He enjoys helping students organize their thoughts about life after Williams and create strategic plans for a successful start to their careers. He also counsels students interested in teaching at the elementary and high school levels.
John graduated with a bachelors degree in history and philosophy from Harvard University and a Master of Science degree from Bank Street College of Education.
Robin manages the on-campus recruiting program and specializes in connecting students to opportunities in business management, finance, and consulting. She loves working with students in all stages of the career process, from those who "don't know where to begin" and are still exploring and deciding to those who just need coaching on how to attain their career goals.
During her 10 years in the field, Robin has been heavily involved in regional and national professional associations such as the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and Northwest Career Educators and Employers Association (NCEE). She has served in a variety of roles from Conference Co-Chair to Vice-President of Technology.
Prior to arriving at Williams in ‘03, Robin and her family spent six years in the Pacific Northwest where they learned that rain and showers are not the same thing and that the best days are ones in which "the mountain is out." While there, Robin was Assistant Director of Career & Employment Services at the University of Puget Sound.
Robin is both a self-professed technology geek and a knitter who admits to spending many happy hours in yarn shops. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Gustavus Adolphus College in ’91 and her Master of Science in Counseling and Student Affairs from Minnesota State University, Mankato in ’96.
Jane Cary came at Williams in March 2008 as the Health Professions Advisor, working with students and alumni at all stages of the pre-med preparation and application processes. She advises anyone interested in graduate schools of the health professions (dental, vet, physician assistant, etc.). As Director of Science and Technology Advising at Williams, she is also available to discuss opportunities in science, math, and environmental fields.
Jane had previously been the Director of Health Professions Advising at Amherst College, Princeton University, and Montana State University, a combined 15 years of experience. At Amherst she was also Associate Director of Career Counseling and the Study Abroad Advisor.
Jane was introduced to Williams as the parent of an ’05 alumnus. She graduated form Bates and earned her Masters at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Jody Spooner was most recently at Florida State University in Tallahassee where he was the founding director of their Office of National Fellowships. He will be working with all students interested in competing for national and/or Williams fellowships. Before that he was a member of the faculty and fellowships advisor at Chipola College in Marianna, Florida. Over a period of his seven years as an advisor, students under his guidance have won more than 50 major fellowships, including the Rhodes and Truman. Spooner received his B.A. in English Literature from Yale University in 1991 and a Master of Arts in American Studies in 1995 from Florida State.
Dawn meets with students interested in attending law school, and/or working in local, state, or federal government, public policy, print and broadcast journalism, think tanks, and jobs in DC. In addition, Dawn oversees the two off-campus recruiting programs, ECCD-Boston and ECCD-New York. Dawn is a member of the Northeast Association of Pre-Law Advisors (NALA) and a member of the 2007 NAPLA conference planning committee.
Dawn volunteers for the Committee to Elect James A. Ruberto Mayor, serves on the American Heart Association Board of Directors-Berkshire Division, chairs the AHA Heart Ball Silent Auction Committee, and volunteers for the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield. Dawn received the American Heart Association Volunteer of the Year, Western District-Berkshire Division in June 2002. Previously, Dawn served on the Literacy Volunteers of Berkshire County Board of Directors, Pittsfield Parade Committee Board of Directors, Berkshire Leadership Program Steering Committee and Alumni Chairperson, Berkshire Business and Professional Women’s Scholarship Committee Chairperson and Northeastern University Alumni Admissions Volunteer.
Dawn graduated from Northeastern University in 1992 majoring in Political Science. During that time, Dawn worked for the United States Department of Labor, United States Senator John F. Kerry, and the Boston Municipal Research Bureau. In addition, Dawn received a Paralegal Certificate (American Bar Association Accredited Program) from Elms College in 1996. Dawn graduated from Cambridge College with a Master’s degree in Education in June 2003, taking courses in counseling psychology, management and education.
Ron joined the staff of OCC in January of 1996 to help build the Alumni Sponsored Internship Program and to create a greater awareness of nonprofit and community service opportunities for Williams students. He counsels students interested in the fields of domestic and international nonprofits, the fine arts, arts management, and entertainment, including film, television, radio, theatre, dance, and music.
For ten years Ron has been the primary liaison to the Multicultural Center and also serves as the office’s diversity liaison. He co-chaired the College Career Services Advisory Board of www.Idealist.org which hosts over 47,000 nonprofit organizations in 165 countries.
Prior to his 20 years in secondary and higher education Ron worked in the field of mental health as a Program Director for Meridian Associates and counseled street gangs in Los Angeles barrios as a Program Manager for a pilot project conducted by USC. Ron also presently serves on the board of United Cerebral Palsy Association and Conor’s Angel’s Foundation. Ron holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from Springfield College and performed graduate studies in Special Education at the University of Vermont.
Ann assists Jane Cary in her work with students considering medicine and the allied health professions.
Marisa is the OCC intern and will be helping the OCC connect more effectively with the students in the neighborhoods. She will also write Guidelines, the OCC newsletter, and supervise all the data entry of job and internship listings that come to Williams. She will be on hand to help with resume review and quick questions regarding OCC programs and resources.
Kristen works with Robin Meyer to help administer the on-campus recruiting program by scheduling recruiter visits, interview schedules, and communications with both students and employers.
Linda is our primary customer relations specialist, the voice of the OCC and who you will see first when you visit our center. She also oversees the credentials service for those applying to teaching positions.
Lynn has been involved in helping students apply for numerous fellowships over the past many years. As former Dean Grudin’s assistant, she developed an expertise about both national and Williams fellowship opportunities and application procedures. She will be Director Jody Spooner’s main colleague in helping Williams and you do well in fellowship competition.
Diane has spent the past nine years helping Williams students take advantage of all the resources, both print and electronic, at the Office of Career Counseling. She is our webmaster and is responsible for the upkeep and updating of our new website and related databases. She also collects data and reports on the destinations of Williams graduates and summer projects of current students that become a part of our annual class report.
John works with students who are undecided about which career path to follow. He also specializes in careers in teaching and education.
