November, December 2008 – January 2009

  • Alert the HP office that you plan to apply for Fall 2010 matriculation. Attend an orientation meeting.
  • Request 4-6 letters of evaluation from professors, supervisors, and others. Providing a draft personal statement or resume may be helpful. These letters are due in the HP office by April 15.
  • Provide a signed copy of the Letter of Evaluation Request Form.
  • Decide when you will take the MCAT and plan your review 3-4 months in advance.

January 2009

  • MCAT preparation should begin in earnest for spring test dates (either independently or through a review service). Materials are available for loan in the HP office or through the commercial review companies.
  • Fill out the "List of Evaluators" form and return it to HP Office Assistant, Ann Beauchamp.
  • Send unofficial transcripts from summer and abroad courses to the HP Office.

February 2009

  • Complete the Autobiographical Information Form, due February 1.
  • Begin thinking about your personal statement for AMCAS.
  • Begin developing your school list. Have a reason to apply to each school (no more than 20!).
  • Attend any and all workshops offered by the HP Office to help you better prepare.

March, April 2009

  • Letters of Evaluation are due mid April, unless authored by a second-
semester professor or summer 2009 employer.
  • Complete your file (ideally before spring break) by submitting autobiographical information, transcripts, GPA calculator and a tentative list of schools.
  • Sign up for an hour-long individual meeting with Ms. Cary (this is required of all applicants). Note: A draft of your personal statement is due 48 hours before this meeting with Ms. Cary if you'd like her to review it.

May 2009

  • The AMCAS application is available at www.aamc.org/students/mcat/
    registration.htm
in mid-May. Check it out, and download AMCAS Transcript Request Forms to send colleges where you've taken courses.
  • Finalize your Personal Statement for the AMCAS application.

June 2009

  • Submit your application to AMCAS/AADSAS/AACOMAS/VMCAS.
  • Send a "processed" copy of your AMCAS application to the HP Office. Indicate to Ann if you will apply additionally to Texas or osteopathic programs.

July, August, September 2009

  • Follow up with evaluators to thank them and ensure that all letters have been received at the HP office. Your evaluation file will not be sent until all letters are received, and a processed AMCAS copy is on file in the HP office.
  • You will receive secondary applications from virtually all of the schools to which you applied. Once you have received them, they should be returned within two weeks. Delaying their return will negatively affect your interview prospects!
  • Follow up with schools to make sure you have a complete application on file with the admissions office (though most will notify you if you don't).
  • Continue brushing up on interview skills and reading about current events.
  • Attend Jane Cary's Interviewing Workshop on September 16th.

October, November, December 2009 – January, February, March 2010

  • This is the typical time period for most medical school interviews.
  • Please keep the HP Office informed of each interview you are granted, each wait list you are put on, and each acceptance you are offered.
  • Once a school makes an offer, you are free to accept it, knowing that you may withdraw later if you are given an offer that you prefer. You may hold multiple acceptances within reason, presuming that you are actively working to decide.

April 2010

  • Start making final decision on acceptances (consult AAMC traffic rules, pp. 50-51 of 2009-2010 MSAR).
  • Contact the HP Office for advice re: school decisions and wait-lists.

May 2010

  • You must finalize your school decision by May 15th and notify those schools you will not be attending in writing. Be gracious! You may stay on wait-lists until the start date of the school whose offer you have accepted.
  • Notify the HP Office of your final choice!

July, August 2010

  • Matriculate!
