Applying for a fellowship can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your college career: even if you don’t win. The process takes careful thought, soul searching, research, well-edited writing, and consultation with trusted advisors and mentors. You must devote time to the process. It is not something you can do at the last minute and succeed.
Applying for a fellowship is excellent preparation for applying to graduate and professional schools.
Did I mention the competition? Winning one of the national fellowships, such as the Rhodes or Marshal, requires not only a stellar application and interview, but a fair amount of luck. Unfortunately, there are many more applicants than awards. However, never mind the competition! Williams students have done exceptionally well, so we encourage all students who meet the basic requirements to apply. And, besides, applying for a fellowship is excellent preparation for applying to graduate and professional schools.
Please take advantage of the professionals on staff at the OCC to help you explore the process of applying for fellowships. Lynn Chick and I are available by appointment and walk-in hours, so come see us. There will be information sessions throughout the year as fellowship deadlines approach. In the meantime, please check out the extensive information on fellowships located on this website.
Jody works with students wanting to compete for national and Williams fellowships, both post-grad and summer.
