East College, named for its obvious geographical location opposite West College, was built in 1842. Having sustained a bad fire in 1841, it was rebuilt in 1842 and was recently brought up-to-date.
East has housed first-year students for many many years, but it will be renovated during the summer of 2006 to house upper-class students who belong to the Currier Neighborhood. Renovations will include the construction of a new common room on the first floor, and updates to rooms.
East currently has both singles and doubles, and small common rooms on each horizontal entry. Rounding out the north-west corner of the Berkshire Quad, it is near to the Williams College Art Museum, the athletic facilities, Goodrich Hall, and the Studio Art Building.
