America Reads / America Counts

How to become an America Reads/America Counts Tutor:

1. Decide what school is the best fit for you and what times you are able to commit to tutoring.

2. Fill out the Tutor Schedule Form below so you can be connected with a teacher for in-class assistance or a student for after school tutoring.

3. Fill out a CORI form (below) for the school you’d like to tutor in. Please give it to the main desk on the first day you begin tutoring.

5. Sara Kazanjian, Jenny Gimian, or Sadie Miller will contact you via email regarding available times for you to tutor in one of the local public elementary schools.

6. Get tutoring!

If you are a Work Study Student and would like to use America Reads/America Counts as your work study:

Follow the steps above
Meet with Sadie Miller to fill out an Employment Authorization form (below).
Once you are a verified student employee of America Reads/ America Counts, turn time verification forms and payroll slips into Sadie Miller in Siskind house the Thursday before timecards are due at the Payroll office.

Essential Things to Know Before Tutoring with America Reads/ America Counts

Setting up tutoring can take time. Be patient if teachers are not sure in early September when they need tutors in their classroom or if parent permission slips for after-school tutoring haven’t materialized. Most in-class and after-school programs begin the first week or two of October.

When you can’t make it to your tutoring session or in-class position, it is imperative that you give the teacher and student ample warning of the cancellation. If you work in a classroom, call the teacher 24 hours in advance. If you work with an individual student, call both the school and the parents 24 hours in advance. If you need to cancel the day of the appointment, you must attempt to find a replacement for you session.

If you need transportation to any of the elementary schools, you may use an office of community service van. If none are available, vans may be provided by the buildings and grounds department. In order to use a car or van from B&G ( http://www.williams.edu/admin/bg/vehicles/), students must provide that department with a valid driver’s license and a driving record from your home state. For more information about obtaining a van, see Nancy Luczynski ( Nancy.E.Luczynski@williams.edu x2483) in the Chaplain’s office in the Paresky Student Center, Room 205.

If you are a work-study student who can receive Federal Work Study money (you must be an American citizen), you may use AR/AC as your work study. If you are working with AR/AC for the first time, you will be paid at a C-1 level, $8.00/hr. All other work study students will be paid at a C-2 level, $8.25/hr. You must fill out an employment authorization employment authorization form before you begin tutoring. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid with questions regarding your work study package. Work Study students must pick up time verification sheets from Nancy in the Chaplain’s office. These sheets must be signed by a teacher or supervisor at the participating elementary school and returned to the Chaplain’s office. In addition, students must fill out a timecard at the Chaplain’s office. Be sure to enter the correct account number on the timecard. America Reads tutors are account number 110-4303010. America Counts tutors are account number 110-4303100. In order to guarantee a steady income flow, you need to turn in your timecards on time. Late payroll slips will not be processed until the next payroll cycle.

You must fill out a Cori form, which is an authorization for a criminal background check before working in the elementary schools. Click here for Cori forms in pdf. format for North Adams, Pownal, and Williamstown.

Each school has its own visitor policies. Please visit the main office of the school each time you volunteer at the school to sign-in and get a visitor’s pass or name tag.
