There are 1,054 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) member institutions and 1,053 of them would like to have achieved what Williams College achieved in the 2003-04 academic year.
Of all the NCAA member colleges and universities in the country only one has been ranked first nationally in academics (U.S. News & World Report) and athletics (Directors' Cup) in the SAME year. Williams College has now completed this rarest of doubles THREE consecutive years (2004, 2005 & 2006) as the Ephs repeated as number one nationally in academics and athletics again in the 2005-06 academic year.
The U.S. News & World Report national poll has proclaimed Williams the nation's top national liberal arts college for a fourth consecutive year based on the Ephs' ranking in 18 different categories including acceptance rate, graduation rate, student/faculty ratio, first year students in top 10% of their high school class and SAT scores.
From 2004-2006 Williams College finished number one in both academics and athletics and that's why the Ephs can proudly say 'nobody does it better.' Should the Ephs win their ninth consecutive Directors' Cup and 11th of the 12 that have been awarded in Divison III in the 2006-07 academic year their unique double in academics and athletics would grow to four years in a row.
Williams has been ranked tied for first in academic reputation an the U.S. News & World Report poll for 16 consecutive years.
Williams has won eight consecutive Directors' Cups and 10 of the 11 Directors' Cups awarded in NCAA Div. III, with only the 1998 Cup eluding their grasp. In 1998, UC San Diego (now a member of NCAA Division II) won the Cup and Williams finished fourth. Points are awarded in the Directors' Cup competition based on each institution's performance in NCAA championship events.
Entering the 2006 spring season Williams trailed The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) by .75 of a point in the 2005-06 Directors' Cup race, but the Ephs out scored TCNJ by 131 points in the spring to win the Cup by a margin of 130.25 points. Williams finished with 920.50 points.
