Ephs Record Two Milestones at Middlebury Tourney
September 17, 2006

Anne O'Leary '10 shot a Neshobe Golf Course women's collegiate record 75 and then won a three hole playoff to earn medalist honors.

"As a team we were all very excited after the first round to be within 4 shots of Middlebury," said Eph head coach Cathy Pohle. "Middelbury has three seniors, one junior and one sophomore and all can shoot in the 80's on any given day. Day 2 - Middlebury's play was just too much for us to catch - they shot a 320. Butthere were at least two new milestones set for the Williams women - a new team low of 338 and a new individual low of 75 - the first time a Williams player has posted a score in the 70's in tournament play. After two tournaments Middlebury is the only team that we have not beaten once - not a bad record."

"Anne's play was outstanding for the entire [second] round," said Pohle. "She began on #18 and made a birdie. She was comfortable on the course and felt very relaxed and 'at home'. It showed in her fine play. The team enjoyed the playoff - as did several other fans who walked along to watch. They began on #18 and the Middlebruy player - Karen Levin - had a chance to win it there but missed her 4-foot putt. On #1 they both parred the hole and then Anne made birdie on #2 for the win. I was impressed with her composure throughout -she never seemed to be rattled by any of the pressure. I expect that Anne will become a very solid #1 player for the team."

It is wonderful to see how the first year players have added to the team," noted Pohle. "Mary Gelber and Kristin Nottebohm played in their first tournament this weekend and both did very well. Mary drives the ball a long way and just needs to adjust to the northern elevated greens (she is from Chicago). Kristin was very steady and seemed to be in control at most times. last week Kait O'Brien played at St. Lawrence."

Next up - Mount Holyoke - at the Orchards next weekend. "We have yet to play both days at the Orchards due to rains and unplayable conditions - hopefully this year will be different," said Pohle.
