Men finish 4th at NCAA Championship Meet
May 27, 2006
LISLE, ILL. — A strong final day pushed the Williams College men's track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the 2006 NCAA Div. III National Track and Field Championships held at Benedictine University Saturday.

Every Eph man that participated Saturday earned All-America honors for their performance. The Ephs finished with 34 points, tied with McMurry University for fourth place.

The men's fourth-place finish is its best 10 years — and this from a squad which brought only seven participants to the national meet.

"I'm just extremely proud of our kids, they represented Williams very well," Ephs head coach Ralph White said. "Performance-wise, if you compare where we were ranked coming into this meet to how we performed, we probably did better than any other team here. It was a great weekend for us."

Junior Mike Davitian led the way by blazing to a new stadium record in the qualifying heat of the 1,500, then running the finals in 3:50.95, good enough for a third place finish. Junior Branden Mirach also had a great day as he leapt 48 feet, 6.25 inches in the triple jump, good for fourth in the nation. Sophomore Andrew Arons had a superb race as well, placing sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.59 seconds.

A pair of Williams seniors put a nice finishing touch on their careers: Senior Dan Austin, the 2005 and 2006 Div. III discus national champion, finished sixth in the shot put witrh a heave of 54-6.75. Austin earned All-America honors in the discus, the hammer and the shot put at these national championships. He was the only participant at the meet to earn All-American honors in three events and tallied and impressive 15 of the Ephs 34 points.

"That was definitely a highlight, watching Dan Austin as a senior come through like he did," White said. "But all six of our guys really stepped up. Mike (Davitian) we saw all year how good he was, but he really put it together here today. Mirach just kept getting better and better. I'm not surprised with how Neal (Holtschulte) did because I've seen him overcome the odds so many times — you can never count out Neal."

Holtschulte, a senior who in November won the 2005 Div. III Cross Country national title, ran despite a bothersome injury and gutted out a fifth-place finish in the 5,000 with a time of 14:57.39.
