Ephs and Jumbos settle for 2-2 tie
October 23, 2004
Williams College women's soccer (6-4-2, 3-4-1 in NESCAC) came back from a two-goal deficit to earn a tie against the Jumbos (6-3-3, 4-1-3 in NESCAC) of Tufts University today.

Tufts opened the scoring early, putting one past Eph keeper Abby Taylor just two and a half minutes into the game. Tufts took a corner kick and, after a quick scramble, Martha Furtek slide the ball past Taylor to go up 1-0.

The Jumbos struck again at 10:12. Becky Greenstein took an indirect kick from the right side of the field about 30 yards out. Defender Ariel Samuelson, jumping up to take part in the offense, was able to head the ball past Taylor and into the upper left corner of the net.

It only took 49 seconds of the second half for the Ephs to get on the scoreboard. Sophomore Jess Hing crossed the ball from the right side and found Lindsey Dwyer '05 open in the middle. Dwyer took a quick shot that Jumbo keeper Meg McCourt could not get her hands on.

Williams tied it up at 64:00 when Alix Oliver '07 took a shot from about 15 yards out that senior Brittany Esty tipped past McCourt. The teams fought on until regulation ran out and then played two ten minute overtime periods. Neither team was able to score again and they remained tied at two apiece.

Head coach Michelyne Pinard commented on the game, saying "It definitely was not a pretty game and we have to work on faster starts. But we battled back which is hard to do after going down 2-0. That says something about their pride and competitiveness." Regarding the remaining two games of the Ephs season, Pinard said "We'll take it one game at a time and see where we end up."

The Ephs get a reprieve from NESCAC action in their next game. They face MCLA at home on Wednesday, October 27th at 4 pm.
