FT. LAUDERDALE, FL -- Williams senior striker Alex Blake scored his team's only goal in a 1-1 tie at the adidas MLS Soccer Combine being held at Lockhart Stadium. Blake's first half tally allowed his team, Supernova, to finish in a 1-1 tie with adidas Mania. The Supernova finished the combine with a record 0-0-2,
The adidas Combine brings together the top soccer prospects - both college seniors and Project-40 players - for evaluation by MLS coaching staffs ahead of the SuperDraft which will be held in Kansas City, MO on Friday, Jan. 17 at 3:30 p.m. ET. You can follow the MLS Draft at www.MLSnet.com.
Blake played the last 44 minutes of his team's first game, a 2-2 tie with the U.S. Under 20 National Team.
Blake put the Supernova on top against the adidas Mania in the 26th minute when he took a pass from Andres Murriagi on the right side and blew past the defender about 30 yards out. He came in on the keeper alone and beat him with a diagonal shot.
"I talked to Alex after the game and he was really excited," said Eph head coach Mike Russo. "He is very confident that he can play at that level and he said that his agent had heard a lot of positive things about him from the MLS and foreign scouts in attendance,"
Russo is headed to the National Soccer Coaches of America Association (NSCAA) annual convention in Kansas City, MO, the site of the MLS Draft. "It will be very interesting to see who takes Alex in the draft," said Russo. "I'm excited to be able to be there for the event."
Blake, however, will likely spend his time in his room on campus watching the computer and waiting for a call. It is likely that he will get a call from several teams expressing interest, but he will not know until a few minutes before he is actually drafted which team is going to make the selection. "Wherever I go, I just want a chance to get on the field to show what I can do," said Blake. "I know now that I can play with these players."
