EPHS and BOBCATS to MEET in ECAC-NEW ENGLAND WOMENS SOCCER TOURNAMENT – Ephs Hope to Avenge Earlier 2-1 Defeat in Lewiston
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Williams women's soccer team (11-6) will make its second trek to Lewiston, MA this fall on Saturday, hoping to avenge an earlier 2-1 loss at the hands of Bates College (11-5), when the Ephs and Bobcats meet in the semifinal sof the ECAC-New England Tournament.
Williams and Bates (seeded second) will square off at 1:00 PM on Leahey Field in the semifinals of ECAC-New England Tournament with the winner advancing to the championship game on Sunday at the site of the highest remaining seed.
The Ephs were seeded sixth in the tournament, so if they are to win the 2000 ECAC-New England title they will have to do it on the road as they are the lowest seeded team remaining. Top-seeded Wellesley will host fifth seeded Amherst in the other semifnal contest.
In their first meeting back on October 7th, the Bobcats came out on top 2-1 to give the Ephs their second loss of the season.
In that first encounter, Bates got a first half goal from DeeDee Shulman who netted a crossing ball from Kristy Crawford just 15 minutes before the intermission.
Midway through the second half the Ephs' Stacey Starner tied the game at one. The tie was short-lived as the Bobcats answered less than five minutes later. Krissie Whiting settled the issue when she headed home a crossing pass from Alicia Dermody..
Bates' Kim Martell made 10 saves in recording the victory, while Melissa Purdy made four for the Ephs.
The Ephs are looking for their third ECAC-New England title since 1990 when they won their first. Ephs also took top honors in 1997 and finished second in 1992.
