During the last few years, I have
largely devoted myself to painting
"on demand", which has resulted in
work that ranges across many styles.
The trick has been to turn the "site-specific" and also "subject-specific" stimulus of the commission to some account in terms of my own interests and pleasures. I like the magic of painting "characters" -and a certain feeling of surprise that comes with their emergence on canvas. Let's say I am required to paint a woman baking. I'll draw from models, copy from photographs, study old masters. But when it comes to sticking her in the mural, I find I have to bury her, or destroy everything else, in order to keep the whole thing alive.
