The Multiplier Effect
About thirty-five years ago, when I was Dean of the Faculty, I first began to think seriously about how one justifies Williams’ investment of large resources in a relatively small student body. My answer to that vitally important question emphasizes the multiplier effect of that investment. What goes on at Williams both inside and outside the classroom prepares its students to contribute disproportionately to the leadership and creativity by which we humans make progress, solve problems, and enrich our common culture. The multiplier effect also applies to Williams faculty as they contribute to the intellectual and personal development of their students and, through scholarship and publications, supply a significant amount of intellectual capital whose benefits extend far beyond Williams.

My gifts to Williams through Pooled Income Fund #2 and through a charitable gift annuity provide the comforting assurance of additional lifetime income for Florence and me. But special pleasure comes from knowing that the ripple effects from my investment in Williams will reach throughout the world and last "till the suns and mountains never more shall be."
