50th Reunion - FAQs

We've provided answers to some general questions below. For more specific questions, please contact the 50th Reunion Fund office.

Q: What gifts count toward the 50th reunion gift?
A: Beginning the July 1 after your 40th reunion, almost any gift you make to Williams is credited to your class's 50th reunion total. Included are gifts to the Alumni Fund, life income arrangements, securities, collectibles, real estate, closely held stock, and cash. See Other Ways to Give for more information.

Q: Does my gift have to support the gift purpose determined by the class?
A: Classes determine the purpose of their 50th reunion gift approximately three years prior to their 50th reunions. Although classmates are encouraged to make gifts toward this purpose, you may direct your gift to another purpose if you prefer, as long as the College finds that purpose in keeping with its mission and current priorities. Remember that Alumni Fund gifts-which are spent annually on that year's operating expenses-also count toward your 50th reunion gift.

Q: If I choose to make a pledge, how long do I have to complete my gift?
A: Up to five years. You can choose the payment schedule, and the pledge can be fulfilled by outright or life income gifts.

Q: Can including Williams in my will count toward my 50th reunion gift?
A: Williams College is pleased to offer a new gift plan for all 50th and post 50th Reunion classes that allows donors to receive current gift credit for an estate gift commitment. For details on this "Williams Today and Tomorrow" gift program go to Williams Today and Tomorrow.

Q: Can a spouse, friend or foundation make a gift to the 50th Reunion Fund?
A: Yes. These gifts, called "associated gifts," pass full tax advantages to the donor. Your company can also make a corporate matching gift.

Q: Can I use my retirement plan assets to make a gift?
A: Yes. In addition to boosting your class's 50th reunion gift, you can substantially reduce the impact of estate and income taxes on your retirement plan.
