ARTH 376 Zen Painting in China and Japan (Not offered 1999-2000)*
This seminar studies Ch'an or Zen painting in China and Japan from the twelfth to the fourteenth century, the golden age of Ch'an (Zen) painting in both countries and the artistic influences stemming from the relationship between the Ch'an (Zen) community, the literati class in China and the samurai in Japan. Evaluation will be based on class participation, oral presentations and a research paper. No prerequisites, but permission of the instructor. Enrollment limited to 12.
