ARTH 261(F) Twentieth-Century Abstract Art
Pure abstract art emerged between about 1910 and 1917, becoming a century-long
art movement. This extraordinary formal breakthrough represented a new vehicle
of expression as well as a sign of modern innovation, before becoming for
some a sign of the exhausted state of modernity. This course will explore
the phenomenon from its roots, through many of its manifestations, until
the present.
Evaluation will be based on a midterm exam, a final exam, and a term paper.
Prerequisites: ArtH 101-102.
