PHIL 310 Reason and Revelation: Philosophy of Religion from Leibniz to Kierkegaard (Same as Religion 286) (Not offered 1998-99)

Why would a perfect being speak at any one time in history, in any one language, to any particular people? Believers in rational religion in the eighteenth century had great difficulty explaining why the God they conceived would produce a Bible. This course will examine accounts of revelation in writings by Leibniz, Lessing, Kant, Hegel, and Kierkegaard. Requirements: three short papers (4-6 pages) or one short and one long paper (10-15 pages); one class presentation. Prerequisite: Philosophy 102.
