LING 101 Introduction to Linguistics (Not offered 1998-99)

An inquiry into the nature of language and its scientific study, the goals and methods of the discipline, and the relationship of linguistics to other fields. Core areas to be treated include phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Language change and a brief survey of the history of English will be followed by an examination of language in social contexts, writing systems, and language acquisition. Lecture-discussion course. Requirements: participation in discussions, a midterm, a final exam, and a research project, topic and format of which are selected by the student in consultation with instructor. Open to all classes without prerequisite.
