HIST 248 Twentieth Century American Politics (Not offered 1998-99)

This course traces the political history of the United States from the Progressive Era to the present day. Some themes which we will explore include the transformations of the American party system, the rise and fall of the "New Deal order," the impact of foreign policy on domestic political developments, the rise of the presidency in the post-World War II era, the realigning effects of the civil rights and women's rights movements on American politics, and contemporary political trends. Classes will be a mixture of lecture and discussion. Evaluation will be based on two in-term essays and a self-scheduled final exam. Group A
