ENGL 347T(S) Henry James
In this tutorial we will read and discuss seven works by Henry James: Washington Square, The Europeans, The Portrait of a Lady, The Bostonians, What Maisie Knew, The Ambassadors, and The Wings of the Dove. Among our main concerns will be James's theories of fiction, his place in the history of the novel, and the recent surge of interest in adapting his work for film. After an initial group session, students will meet with the instructor in pairs for one hour each week. Every other week each tutee will write a 5-page paper and present it at the tutorial session. On alternate weeks, the tutee will be responsible for critiquing the other student's essay. Students will be evaluated on their written work, their oral presentation of that work, and their analysis of the writing and presentations of their colleagues. Prerequisite: English 101. Enrollment limited to 10. (1800-1900)
