ARTS 312T(S) Poetic Spaces

This tutorial is devoted to making poetic, resonant images and exploring the numerous ways that pictorial space can be articulated to create them. We will explore the definitions of visual space, both representational and non-representational, the appropriation of pictorial space and its relationship to the notion of time in painting, and how qualities of light help define the emotionally resonant in an image. This development will occur using painting, drawing, and printmaking as the medium, and those who have had any one of these on the 200 level are eligible. The class will consist of weekly meetings, a presentation during the semester, individual and group critiques, and a final show of the work in the Wilde Gallery at the end of the semester. You will also be required to take advantage of the Visiting Artist lectures, and one trip to New York
City to see gallery shows.
The emphasis of this class, however, is the body of work that you produce and its clarity of thought, and to that end, this class will require a considerable amount of work each week to achieve these goals.
