ARTH 371 Goddesses in Asian Art (Not offered 1998-99)*

Throughout the history of Asian religions, goddesses manifest themselves in numerous ways. They are the sources of creativity and destruction. They are passionate lovers, temptresses, and compassionate saviouresses. They are symbols of fertility, prosperity, and longevity. The objective of this seminar is to serve as an introduction to goddesses as depicted in Asian art (mainly painting and sculpture, prints will also be considered). Through careful examinations of the artistic representations, students learn various manifestations of the goddesses and their complex natures. This seminar also attempts to discern the significance of the goddesses in the context of Asian cultures. Evaluation is based on class participation, one visual analysis (1 1/2-2 pages), two short essays (3-4 pages), and a term paper (8-10 pages). No prerequisites, but permission of the instructor.
