ARTH 243 Flemish and Spanish Art of the Seventeenth Century (Not offered 1998-99)
A survey of painting and sculpture produced in the Southern Netherlands and Spain, both part of the Hapsburg Empire ruled by the King of Spain. We will examine the art of Rubens in its social, political and religious context, including the cult of relics and of miraculous Madonnas, and compare it with the production of Velazquez, the leading court painter in Spain. Other painters to be discussed with attention to issues of narrative and gender will include Van Dyck, Jordaens, Brouwer, and Jan Bruegel the Elder among the Flemings, and Zurbaran, Ribera, and Murillo among the Spaniards. Requirements: three quizzes, midterm, and final exam or paper. No prerequisites.
