ARTH 229(F) The Gothic
The diverse, and even at times audacious, works of the Late Middle Ages in Western Europe (mid-12th-15th C.)-known to us as Gothic-raise questions about the complex roles of architecture and art within differing and rapidly changing cultural, societal, and political structures. This lecture course explores the Gothic, chronologically and thematically, with attention to such critical issues as the problems of defining Gothic, the emergence and transformations of forms, styles and imagery, and the meanings of works in light of changes in patronage, audience, and production. Requirements: four quizzes; final; one or two short papers. No prerequisites.
