ARTH 221(F) Italian Late Medieval Art: 1250-1425
Painting, sculpture, and architecture of the late Dugento, Trecento, and early Quattrocento in Rome, Siena, Florence, and north Italy. Principal artists studied: Pietro Cavallini, Duccio, Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini, the Lorenzetti, the Pisani, Arnolfo di Cambio, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Ghiberti, and Masaccio. Special topics for discussion: the Gothic style in Italy, the survival of the ancient Roman style, the influence of Byzantium, the rise of mercantilism and the republican city state, the impact of St. Francis, the Black Death, the International Gothic style, and the "rediscovery" of linear perspective. Requirements: two hour exams and a term paper. Prerequisites: ArtH 101-102.
